Ongoing Research Projects

DIGITAL PIRACY IN BRICS AND DEVELOPED ECONOMIES: A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF PSYCHOLOGICAL, SOCIOLOGICAL AND CULTURE FACTORS

ABOUT THE PROJECT:
This research project is attempting to study the behavioral, cultural and social aspects that factor into digital piracy. A s evidenced from the title; psychologists, sociologists and political scientists have studied the rationale and motivations behind digital piracy, mostly in developed economies. Studies show that the act of piracy can be attributed to the way certain cultures view intellectual property (collectivist vs. individualist) and other cultural variables like power distance or masculinity. However, there exists a dearth of such research in developing countries. This project would attempt to look beyond the existing legal structure and at lesser-acknowledged psychological, sociological and cultural factors.

FUNDS RECEIVED/ SANCTIONED: Rs. 10,00,000/-

SOURCE OF FUNDING: JGU Research Grant Committee

DURATION OF THE PROJECT: 12 months

OUTPUT OF THE RESEARCH:

The data collection phase, which includes qualitative and quantitative research, have been initiated. At this stage, our sample size in India is 1000 for the questionnaires and 100 for the interviews. The interviews will follow a semi-structured format and the key respondents will all be stakeholders’/policy makers spanning the software, music, film and gaming industries along with government bodies and lawyers. We are also working with an institution in Spain (Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICAI-ICADE), which has agreed to collect data, given a sample size of roughly 500-1000 questionnaires and 10-20 interviews.

DEVELOPMENTS RELATED TO THE PROJECT:

- Collaborated with Universidad Pontificia Comillas ICAI-ICADE, Spain (Prof. Bruno Martin) and University of Belgrade, Serbia (Prof. Vanja Bajovic). The translated questionnaire was administered to students in the University of Belgrade and 120 responses were collected.

- Final report of the project is submitted to the JGU review grants committee.

- One book chapter is published in Springer and one research article is accepted for publication by a SCOPUS indexed peer- reviewed journal.

- Presented papers related to the findings of the project in UN Congress (Doha) and Pretoria.

- Based on this research, book titled “Piracy In The Digital Era: Psychosocial, Criminological & Cultural Factors” was published in the year 2019.
