FAQ

Since inception JIBS is holding awareness programs, training sessions and workshops for teachers, principals, administrators and school children falling in the age range of 13-18. JIBS has so far conducted training workshops for1467 national schools and 386 international schools which consisted of 4861 teachers, 1623 principals and 1635 career counsellors and school administrators. Over the years since the beginning of these community outreach programs, June 2014 - July 2018, special emphasis has been given to receiving feedback and entertaining queries. Based on the feedback data accessible, needs assessment was carried out for teachers and school going adolescents. Feedback queries were examined and a thematic analysis was carried out in order to assess the issues that needed further intervention.

Majority queries revolved around addressing the management of behavioral problems in the classrooms. Queries consisted of situation problems arising in the classroom as well as personal problems faced in managing their child’s behavioral issues. Among the issues specified, increasing aggression and acting out behavior in children was the most sort after problem. Anger issues among children have been on the rise, with cases of physical violence, tantrums in class, abusive behavior increasing in number. Participants have been facing problems in managing these children. Apart from aggression, other behavioral problems identified were dealing with hyperactive behavior. These children find it impossible to pay attention in class and are unable to concentrate for longer periods. Many children are now days being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, however measures of management are lacking in schools and participants are unable to handle hyperactive disruptive behaviors. Another behavior at the opposite spectrum of this which has been identified as problematic by participants is shyness and introversion. Such children remain in themselves and do not come out of their shell to participate. As a result, they are unable to form bonds with others and experience loneliness, lack of confidence and depression. All of the above have led to poor academics. Furthermore, along with this some children have been categorized as slow learners having learning disability and developmental problems such as autism. Special measures are required for such children for inclusion and to be able to catch up with the class.

Substance use such as alcohol, bidi, cigarettes, chewable tobacco, marijuana etc. have been increasing among high school students in India, with the prevalence rates being as high as 12.5% (Tsering, Pal & Dasgupta, 2010). Addiction is on the rise and students in order to attain the substance start using illegal means such as stealing, bullying etc. to obtain money to buy the drugs. Participants feel helpless and inquire “How do we deal with children who come with drugs and cigarettes always? We have counselled, yet it falls on deaf ears. We have showed him movies with the after effects but he’s not stopping.” Awareness workshops on drugs and the impact of drugs should be carried out regularly in schools. Parents should be kept in loop and special help cells should be established for students to be able to seek counseling. Another aspect of addiction which now days has evolved however is technology addiction and misuse. With the era of smart phones, ipads, laptops, internet, live chatting, virtual gaming; many students get hooked and start spending great amount of time on their gadgets, neglecting the other tasks such as school work, studying, spending family time etc. which they should do. Technology acts as an aid, however the internet has also increased impulsive behavior and nowadays students seek instant gratification with everything being on their fingertips. Measures are needed to address and control these issues.

Another theme that emerged was in terms of dealing with parents. Many queries were raised such as: “How to deal with parents who are expecting more from teachers?”, “How to deal with misbehaving parents?”, “With rise in both parents working till late, how do we ensure their conscious efforts towards their wards?, “Most parents are single with other parents out of city / abroad. The strategies to handle their concerns.”, “How can we motivate parents that knowledge is more important than marks?”, “How do deal with parents who are unwilling to accept about the rude behaviour of their child at school?”, “How to convince parents to modify their parenting attitude to assist in bringing behavioral changes in pupil?” All the above queries and more indicated a need for counseling of the parents to be as important for the child, as parents being the primary caregiver play a huge role in the development of the child. Education and sensitizing parents regarding child’s behavior issues hence becomes very important along with teaching them ways in which they can work towards the betterment of the child.
